Our Building's History
LashBack is located in the building now known as 555 Washington Avenue in the
heart of downtown St. Louis. LashBack is surrounded by history- as it carves
out its own place in it. We welcome everyone to St. Louis for a visit. You will
find LashBack is literally steps away from the Arch on the banks of the mighty
Mississippi River- not to mention the new Busch stadium, the home of World
Champion Cardinal baseball, the convention center, Rams Football, and many fine
dining restaurants and hotels.
Designed in 1898, 555 Washington Avenue was first constructed as the original
Bradford-Martin Building at the turn of the century during a spate of new
construction after the opening of the Eads Bridge, connecting Illinois to St.
Louis City over the Mississippi River. There is evidence that the nineteenth
century developer actually united existing buildings behind the Italianate,
Beaux-Arts façade. In 1904, David May, owner of the nation’s largest retailer
purchased the building, but relocated only ten years later. Subsequently, a
warren of garment shops located in the building until after a complete
restoration in the late 1980’s brought new office tenants which eventually all
gravitated to the advertising and marketing industry.
LashBack joined Zipatoni, Weber-Shandwick, Infuz and Benton’s Edge at 555
Washington Ave in early 2006 and has made the 4th floor its LashBack Red and
Gun Metal gray home. The office boasts a post-modern façade, anchored by a
glowing red LashBack brand logo. Large movable walls enable a change of scenery
for the conference room at the heart of the suites. Dramatic floor to ceiling
arched windows frame a vibrant downtown from almost every space. The kitchen
which seats 40 around a concrete slab table sits on an overhang on Washington
Avenue that enables views across the river into Illinois and soon will offer a
view down all of Washington Avenue into the fashionable loft district, once a
controversial downtown shopping mall walkway is removed in mid-2007.
Excerpts of the history of the 5’s building was taken from Elizabeth McNulty’s “St. Louis Then and Now” published by Thunder Bay
Press.
