Q: Unable to Register Software
I have downloaded LashBack, but I am unable to register. What’s wrong?
A: LashBack requires open communication to http://www.lashback.com through port 80. Make sure you are connected to the Internet when you try to register the software. Also, if you have a personal firewall installed, make sure that port 80 communication is not restricted to http://www.lashback.com.
Finally, LashBack does not currently work with proxy servers. If you are using a proxy server (such as Wingate) to connect to the Internet, you will not be able to register or use LashBack unless you install LashBack on the PC that is directly connected to the Internet.
Q: LashBack Toolbar Isn't Working and/or Filtering No Longer Works
The LashBack toolbar doesn’t work any more OR LashBack doesn’t seem to be filtering messages anymore. It used to work. What can I do?
A: On rare occasion, the LashBack plug-in for Outlook may become disabled and not function properly. To resolve this, you can delete the toolbar and restart Outlook. The steps for this are outlined below:
1) Right-Click on the LashBack toolbar and click Customize from the menu that comes up 2) From the customize dialog, select the LashBack toolbar entry and click Delete. 3) Click OK when prompted whether to delete the LashBack toolbar 4) Close and re-open Outlook. The LashBack toolbar should re-appear and be fully functional.
Q: Outlook 2000 - Custom Form Could Not Be Opened Error
I am using Outlook 2000 and sometimes I get a message stating “The custom form could not be opened. Outlook will use an Outlook form instead”. What does this mean?
A: This is a known issue with Outlook 2000 and plug-ins. Install Office 2000 service pack 3, and this should resolve the issue. This service pack can be found at http://www.microsoft.com.
Q: Spam Not Being Moved to Spam Folder
LashBack is marking incoming email with [LashBack] but isn’t moving them to the Spam Folder. What can I do to fix this?
A: LashBack marks the subject of all emails it identifies as spam with the word [LashBack]. It then has an Outlook Express rule which is responsible for moving messages to the Spam Folder. If Outlook Express is not moving the email to the spam folder, you will need to configure a new mail rule in Outlook Express as follows:
1) Access the message rules from Outlook Express by selecting Tools >> Message Rules >> Mail from the Outlook Express main menu bar. This will bring up the Message Rules Dialog.
2)In the Message Rules Dialog, if you already have a rule called LashBack, highlight this rule and click the Remove button.
3) Create a new rule by clicking the New button. This will bring up the New Rule dialog.
4) In the Select Conditions for your rule selection area, select "Where the Subject line contains specific words"
5) In the Rule Description text area, click "contains specific words". This should bring up the Type Specific Words dialog.
6) In the Type Specific Words dialog, type [LashBack] and click Add. Then Click OK, which will take you back to the New rule setup dialog.
7) From the New Rule setup dialog, in the "Select the Actions for your Rule", select "Move it to the specified folder"
8) In the Rule Description text area, click "specific" folder. This should bring up the Move to folder dialog. Select the Spam folder and click OK.
9) Enter a name for the rule in the "Name of the Rule" text box. This name can be anything you'd like, but LashBack is the suggested name.
10) Confirm your rule is set up properly. The Rule Description should read as follows: "Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the Subject line contains '[LashBack]' Move it to the Spam folder"
11) Click OK.
You now have a new mail rule that should automatically move items to the Spam Folder as they arrive.
Q: Outlook Express Closes when I click LashBack
Outlook Express closes when I click the LashBack button OR Outlook Express prompts for a folder when I click the LashBack button. What's wrong?
A: When you click the LashBack button, LashBack is trying to move the selected message(s) to your Spam folder. If you do not have a spam folder, this may cause problems with LashBack. Follow these steps to confirm that you have a Spam folder and create a new one if you do not.
Confirm you have a Spam Folder: 1)From the Outlook Express main menu, select View >> Go to Folder. This should bring up the Go to Folder dialog which lists all folders in Outlook Express.
2) Expand the Local Folders entry by clicking the + sign to the left of the folder (a - sign will appear if it already expanded)
3) Beneath the Local Folders entry, you should see a folder called Spam. This folder should be on the same level as Inbox and Outbox (not a sub folder of another folder). If you do not see a Spam folder here, see Create a new Spam Folder for assistance.
Create a new Spam Folder: 1) From the Outlook Express main menu, select File >> Folder >> New. This should bring up the Create Folder dialog.
2) In the Folder Name text box, type the word Spam
3) In the "Select the folder in which to create the new folder" area, select the entry named Local Folders by clicking it.
4) Click OK.
You should now have a new spam folder and the LashBack button should now properly move items here when you click LashBack.
Q: Cannot Retrieve Email from POP3 Server
LashBack changed my POP3 Settings and now I cannot access my email. What do I do?
A: LashBack uses a POP3 Proxy to filter incoming email. In simple terms, LashBack routes all email through a local application on your PC. This is so LashBack can determine which items are Spam.
In order to process incoming email, LashBack will change the following mail server settings:
1) Incoming mail (POP3) Server: Original Setting: mail.yourisp.com New Setting: 127.0.0.1
2) Incoming Mail Mail Server Account Name: Original Setting: you@yourisp.com New Setting: you@yourisp.com/mail.yourisp.com
3) Server Port Number - Incoming Mail (POP3): Original Setting: 110 New Setting: 3110
If you are having problems with LashBack and retrieving email, confirm these settings in Outlook Express. You should not alter the changes LashBack has made to these settings. If you are having problems and these settings, uninstalling LashBack will restore your original settings.
The following are known issues with LashBack and Outlook Express filtering: Will not work with IMAP or HTTP protocols Will not work if your ISP requires Secure Password Authentication on POP3 Older versions of Antivirus software, such as PC-Cillin 2002 and prior, may prevent users from retrieving email

Q: Delete All the Email in my Spam Folder
My Spam folder is filled with old email. How do I delete it all?
A: If you'd like to delete all the messages in your spam folder, do not delete the folder itself. Instead, simply navigate to your spam folde and highlight a message there. Then hit CTRL + A on your keyboard (hold down your CTRL key and press the letter A). This should select all the messages in the folder. Then, simply click the Delete key on your keyboard. This will delete all the items in your spam folder.
Q: Subscriber status not reflected
I purchased the software and paid by credit card. However it still says that I am a trial user. What's wrong?
A: LashBack updates your subscriber status each time you log into your PC. Try logging out of your machine and logging back in. This should update your subscriber status.
Q: My LashBack Toolbar Doesn't Appear in Outlook
My LashBack toolbar isn't showing in Outlook. What is wrong?
A: If Outlook was shut down improperly or the LashBack toolbar failed to load properly, Outlook may have disabled the LashBack toolbar. Follow these steps for checking whether LashBack was disabled by Outlook and re-enabling it:
Checking to see if the toolbar has been disabled: 1) Open Outlook 2) From the main menu, select Help >> About Micorosoft Outlook. This will bring up the About Microsoft Outlook dialog. 3) Click the button named Disabled Items. This will bring up the Disabled Items dialog. 4) If you see an entry in this list called LashBack for Outlook, Outlook has disabled the toolbar. Follow the steps below to re-enable the toolbar.
Enabling the toolbar: 1) From the disabled items dialog, highlight LashBack for Outlook. 2) Click the Enable button. 3) Close and restart outlook.
Your LashBack toolbar should now be enabled and should appear in Outlook.
Q: SafeList an Entire Domain
I always want to trust email from a specific email domain (for example, @yahoo.com). Can I add an entire domain to my SafeList?
A: In version 2.14 an higher of LashBack, you can add an entire domain to your SafeList. Follow these steps to add a domain to your SafeList: 1) Open the LashBack Control Panel by double-clicking on the LashBack icon in your task bar (lower right hand corner of your screen - next to your system clock). This will open the LashBack Control Panel 2) From the LashBack Control Panel, click the SafeList button. This will take you to the SafeList screen. 3) Click the Add button, which will bring up the Edit dialog. 4) In the enter email address text box, enter the domain you wish to add to your SafeList. For example, enter @yahoo.com if you would like to accept email from anyone what has a yahoo.com email address. 5) Click OK
You have now added the entire email domain to your SafeList and all emails from this domain will be safely delivered to your inbox.
Q: Prevent LashBack from Changing POP3 Mail Settings
LashBack keeps changing my mail server settings. Some of my mail accounts are not supported by LashBack but LashBack changes these settings and I have to manually reset them each time I reboot. How do I prevent this?
A: LashBack is designed to alter your POP3 mail server settings in order to filter email. Each time you log in to your machine, it automatically performs these setting changes. If you wish to prevent LashBack from changing your mail server settings, do the following: 1) Navigate to C:\Progam Files\LashBack using My Computer of Explorer. 2) Run the executable named AutoProxySetup.exe by double-clicking on this file. 3) Click the Disable button.
LashBack will no longer alter any POP3 settings for Outlook Express. If you would later like to re-enable this functionality, simply run AutoProxySetup.exe again and click the Enable button.
Note that this functionality is only available in version 2.14 and higher. If you have a prior version, you will need to install an updated version from http://www.lashback.com/download.htm
Q: LashBack Toolbar Not Appearing in Outlook Express
LashBack appears to be filtering spam properly, but I don't see the LashBack toolbar in Outlook Express. What's wrong?
A: If LashBack is properly filtering email in Outlook Express, then the toolbar should be functioning properly.
The LashBack toolbar in Outlook Express appears on the Folder Bar. It is possible that you are currently not displaying this toolbar. In Outlook Express, go to View >> Layout from the main menu. From the Layout tab, under Basic, make sure that "Folder Bar" is selected. Then click OK. The LashBack toolbar should now appear in Outlook Express.
