Getting Started
a. Requirements
Any computer utilizing the Windows operating system (versions
98/ME/NT/XP/2000) and the Microsoft Outlook (versions 2000/2002/2003)
email application from the Microsoft Office suite is compatible
with the LashBack anti-spam program.
b. Installation
After downloading the application, navigate to the location
where you saved the setup file and double-click it to begin
the installation. Follow the on-screen instructions. Questions
about what you read in the installation should be directed
to customer service (cs@lashback.com) while any technical
difficulties you may have should be directed to our support
page on the website (www.lashback.com/support).
II. Your New Toolbar
After installation, simply open Outlook and a new toolbar
should appear near the top of your application. You will see
four new buttons labeled Lashback!, Add to SafeList, Configure,
and Reports (though this one displays various statistics and
may not actually say Reports). This is where the majority
of your interaction with the program will take place.
a. LashBack!
When a spam makes it into your inbox, simply highlight that
message and click on the LashBack! Button. Several things
will occur automatically:
• The message will be removed from your inbox and placed
into a spam folder (the red wastebasket).
• The sender of that message is added to your Blocked
list.
• The message is scanned for the websites it advertises
and those addresses are added to your Blocked list –
this is so that spam messages advertising the same websites
will be filtered as well, even if they contain different text
and even if they come from a different sender.
• The message is reported to LashBack as spam. Our servers
record your report and compare it to a list of other reports.
If enough other users have identified that advertiser as a
spammer, then that advertiser’s domain is blocked for
all LashBack subscribers.
• Also, when the message is reported, the LashBack servers
send a testing ‘probe’ to determine if it has
a working unsubscribe link. The link is followed and the unsubscribe
process is tested to determine if the advertiser respects
the request (i.e. doesn’t use the request just to send
out more spam). If we can determine that they respect the
request, we then submit your email address for removal from
the spammers’ lists. If we cannot determine the safety
of the unsubscribe or if we establish that they abuse requests
for removal, we will not send your address and the offenders
are reported to the authorities.
But all
you have to do is highlight a message and click on LashBack!
The rest is automatic.
If you
accidentally LashBack against a sender whose email you want
to receive, open your Spam folder, highlight the message and
click on Add to Safelist. This removes them from your Blocked
list and will allow that sender to deliver messages to you
once again.
b. Add
to SafeList
The LashBack SafeList is a list of trusted senders that you
have authorized may send you email. This list overrides all
blocking and filtration, allowing your family, friends and
coworkers to reach you by email as normal.
Adding
someone to your SafeList can be done in one of two ways:
• Highlight a message from the sender to be added and
click on Add to SafeList.
• Open the Spam Control panel (double-click the LashBack
icon in your system tray) and select the SafeList tab. Click
on Add and type (or paste) the trusted email address into
the window that pops up. When you click on Okay, they will
be added to your SafeList.
You may
remove someone from the SafeList by simply scanning through
the list in the Spam Control panel, highlighting the address
and clicking on Remove.
c. Configure
The Configure button presents several options once you’ve
clicked on it. They include:
• Clean Mailbox Now – You may use this option
as an alternate approach to scanning your inbox for spam.
By default, LashBack scans messages as they arrive. However,
if you’ve unchecked that option, you can use Clean Mailbox
now to scan ALL messages in any folder you select. Any spam
found will be removed from its folder and placed in the Spam
folder.
• Lashback Support – Clicking this option will
open the Support page of our website where you can view online
tutorials, manuals or submit requests for support.
• Check for Updates – This option will request
any updates that may exist on the LashBack website. If updates
are available, you will be able to easily download and install
them.
• Outlook Configuration – A variety of LashBack
options may be changed here. We’ll only discuss a few
here. LashBack, by default, automatically scans incoming email
for spam and diverts offending messages to your spam folder.
You can change which folders are checked for spam (add more
folders other than the inbox, if you wish) by clicking on
‘Folders’ and adding those desired items to your
list. You can also have spam diverted to a folder other than
your Spam folder by clicking on the ‘Select’ button
and choosing the desired destination. Finally, if you would
like to have your Outlook Address Book scanned for email addresses
and have those addresses added to your SafeList, that option
is available here as well.
d. Reports
The Reports button on the LashBack toolbar displays various
statistics on your ongoing battle against spam, including
Messages Processed, Spam Found and Spam Reported. Clicking
on the Reports button will launch the Spam Control Panel,
where you will be able to request customized and detailed
reports on the spam-fighting that has occurred while using
the product. Refer to the Spam Control panel section of this
manual for more details.
III. Spam Control
You can access several important sections of LashBack’s
configurations by opening the Spam Control panel. You can
view the panel by double-clicking the red lightning icon in
your system tray or by clicking the ‘Launch Spam Control
Panel’ link in the Outlook Configuration window. There
are four sections in the Spam Control:
• Configure – You may add email addresses for
LashBack to protect by simply clicking ‘Add’ and
typing in the address. You may also adjust how often LashBack
checks with the LashBack servers for messages that are Safe
to unsubscribe from and how many messages you are willing
to process at once.
• SafeList – Add or Remove names from your list
of trusted senders in this section.
• Blocked – Add or Remove senders and domain names
from your list of unwanted email sources.
• Reports – Run a detailed report on spam-fighting
activity by selecting start and end dates for the report and
clicking ‘Build Report.’ Clicking on any of the
item “Details” will bring up a text-only version
of the spam message. The date listed is when the message was
reported to our servers. The sender is the specific email
address used to send you the spam. The advertiser is the name
of the domains that were advertised in the message. The Unsubscribe
Status tells you whether or not you have been removed from
a spammer’s email lists. The Trust level indicates whether
or not LashBack has already identified the advertiser as someone
who is Trusted or Untrusted for the purposes of Unsubscribing.
And the Block Status indicates whether or not the message
was filtered just for you (Local) or for all LashBack subscribers
(Global).
IV. What Happens Automatically
Many of the benefits of LashBack occur without any action
by you, the subscriber. After you’ve created a SafeList
of trusted senders (which most users will do as part of their
installation) from your address book, from your Sent folder
or by other means, you’re essentially ready to receive
email the way you once used to – unhindered by the burden
of spam. Since the default settings of Lashback are suitable
for most users, you’ll simply get less (if not zero)
spam as it blocks, filters and unsubscribes you from spam
without ever needing to click a single button. If spam ever
does make it into your inbox, you have the simplest of solutions
available to you – the LashBack! button. No spam-fighting
solution could be easier or more powerful.
